"Now about spiritual gifts...I do not want you to be ignorant."
I Corinthians 12:1
We've all been there. We've said "Yes" when we wanted to say "No".
There's a need in the church, a very real need. We see that need. We know it's important. Someone asks if we will do it. That makes us feel important. So we say, ever so reluctantly..."Yyyeeeee..s!" But in our hearts we are saying, "YIKES!"
John Maxwell, a well-known author and expert on Christian leadership, made this observation,
"Without exception, the growth and health of your church relies on one demographic: women. Not only do women occupy more seats and perform more roles on a typical Sunday, they are the primary reason for increased attendance among men and children."
We all see the truth in this statement. We also see a warning here. We women take on so many responsibilities, roles we are not gifted for, that we wear ourselves out working for the kingdom of God. That's why it is so very important for us "not to be ignorant"! We must know our personal spiritual gifts in order to discover our specific role in the body of Christ. Then the Holy Spirit will flow through us and we will thrive as we do the ministry He has equipped to do.
The gifts the Spirit gives are special endowments of grace given to every Christian. They are according to God's will for every one of us as individuals. They are not human talents; they are God-given abilities, our personal assignment from God for serving the church. Our gift mix is as individual as our appearance and personality type.
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other... It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have (I Cor. 12:7,11NLT)."
I love how Paul goes on in I Corinthians 12 by talking about the church as the body of Christ. He says that we each function as a body part. Just as our eyes, ears, nose, fingers, and toes each perform a different function, so it is for each person in the body of Christ. We are body parts! An eye cannot hear! A bellybutton cannot speak! In the same way, someone whose spiritual gift is service will not do well in a leadership role. They will wither and so will that ministry.
- Do you know your spiritual gifts?
- Are you operating in your gifts?
- Or are you just saying "yes" when you should be saying "no"?
When you are operating in your gifts:
- You will be passionate about what you are doing.
- That particular ministry role will be fulfilling to your soul.
- You will be energized, not drained, by doing it. (Except for those times when we push ourselves)
- You will be very good at it
- Others will affirm you in your special ability "giftedness" to perform in that area
Ask God to help YOU discover and unwrap your spiritual gifts...
