50 Days of Holy! Follow the Yellow Brick Road

“Follow the Yellow Brick Road”
(a new enlightened version)
by Cheryl Simpson

"When He, the spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth;
for He will not speak on His own authority,
but whatever He hears He will speak;
and He will tell you things to come.”
John 16:13

When I was five years of age, the movie “The Wizard of Oz”, was being watched by families across our country. Dorothy was looking for her way home. The only one who could help her was the Wizard who lived in the Emerald City. Along the way she met a scarecrow who longed to have a heart, a lion who wished for courage and a tin man who desired a brain, wisdom. Longing for a home, a heart of love, inner courage, and wisdom, they sought to find this wizard.

I invite you to follow the yellow brick road with me for a new (enlightened) version of the story. In this version, instead of a powerless wizard, Jesus Christ is the "the way, the truth, and the life". No one else can take us to our Father! And the Holy Spirit is our guide along the way, leading us and preparing us for our heavenly home, where the streets are paved with gold.

Dorothy is filled with hope of HOME.
We can imagine her singing, “We’re Marching to Zion.” We can also see her clicking her ruby red slippers dreaming of heaven, whispering, “There’s no place like home.” When she sings “Some Where over the Rainbow”, she is actually singing the lyrics to “What a Day that will be!”

The scarecrow has a heart of love and compassion. He remembers that
“The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us (Romans 5:5)."

“All of you live in harmony with one another, be sympathetic. Love as brothers, be compassionate and humble (1 Peter 3:8)."

Our dear friend, the tin man has wisdom!

“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Glory, may give you a Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him (Ephesians 1:17)."

The lion is quite courageous!

“The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is my stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid (Psalm 27:1)."

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified (Deuteronomy 31:6)."

“God has not given us a spirit of timidity but of power and love and discipline (2 Timothy 1:7)."
As the Holy Spirit guides you along your yellow brick road today,
* Are you like Dorothy? Are you celebrating the hope of heaven? the streets that are paved in gold, rehearsing to the tune, "When we all get to Heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be!"

*Are you like the Scarecrow? Are you seeking God’s wisdom by listening and responding to the Holy Spirit, surrendering,“Be Thou my vision, Oh Lord of my heart...”

*Are you a Lion? Are you walking boldly and courageously in faith, singing, “I have decided to follow Jesus."

* Are you like the Tin Man, showing compassion to others along the path of your daily life? Humming, "I want to be like Jesus in my Heart”?
Our Glorious Father,
We praise you this day for the wonderful gifts you have given us through your Son, Jesus our Lord and Savior and through the mighty working of the Holy Spirit. We celebrate today.
We thank you that we can walk this road with full direction as we listen to the Spirit’s voice and stay obedient to His will and His way.
We thank you Father for your word that comes to mind as we read and apply your truths to our lives. Our desire is to continue to rejoice like these characters today that are skipping as they follow the yellow brick road, singing to our Lord and Savior all the way! We are having such fun in you and there is no pretending just rejoicing.”
Amen and Amen
