50 Days of Holy! The Deposit

"Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ.
He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us,
and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit,
guaranteeing what is to come."
2 Cor. 1:21-22NIV

Promises. Promises. Promises.

It's very frustrating, isn't it? The number of times we've been promised this-or-that by so-and-so or such-and-such; and the number of times we've been let down. Disappointed, even betrayed, in business, marriage, friendships.

It's why this scripture sounds too good to be true...
  • The promise of solidity, a firm foundation for our lives. In this world? How could it be?
  • The seal of the Almighty God, His personal designer-brand stamped upon our lives? Seriously?
  • The promise of the Holy Spirit of God being deposited in our hearts? Preposterous!
  • A promise, guarantee, warranty, eternal contract with an infinite God? Eternal life with Him in Heaven? Hmmm...
Promises. Promises. Promises. Have you been disappointed to the point of despair? distrust? I've been there, my friend. So down and out. The earth shifting beneath your feet. Unsettled. Uncertain. Unknowing.

The uncanny thing about these situations?
It's exactly that moment in time when heaven and earth collide in our heart and mind. We are suddenly aware that there IS an eternity with an eternal God who cares. Cares about you! Cares about me! We become acutely aware of His promises. And, just in case our memories fail us, His Holy Spirit tugs at our hearts to remind us: that He's there and He always has been. His Holy Spirit whispers His promises into our mind, reminding us that these promises are eternal and forever,  extending from the beginning to the end of a period of time that has no beginning or end.
"And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1:13-14 NIV)."

The Deposit?
The Holy Spirit is living proof that God is actively re-creating us into His image.  At the very moment you believe, the Holy Spirit becomes the living, breathing Christ within the depth of your being. Your body is now a temple of the Living God!

The Holy Spirit serves as our engagement ring. He is the promise that someday we will be seated at the Wedding Supper in the great banquet hall of heaven with our Bridegroom Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit's coming was promised throughout the Old Testament. This promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost, fifty days after Jesus resurrected from death in Acts Chapter Two. It is still being fulfilled today.

What is to come?
Life on earth is uncertain. But we can be certain of this: God has, does, and will fulfill His promises! The fullness of His promise is encapsulated in the purpose of Christ: eternal life in God's heavenly kingdom; total and complete holiness. We will be spiritually united with God forever.

Until then?
Paul gave Timothy this advice, but it's intended for us as well:
"Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you--guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in you (2Timothy 1:14NIV)."
The power of this passage is in that last phrase:
  • "with the help of the Holy Spirit"
    • If the apostles needed help in their journey, we certainly do!
    • They didn't try to live for Christ in their own strength and according to their own plans. They relied on the Holy Spirit to guide them day-by-day, moment-by-moment.

  • "the Holy Spirit who lives in you"
    • This is the utmost evidence that God does not expect us to do life on our own.
    • It displays His longing to live in total Oneness with us.
The Holy Spirit is not just a one-time deposit. We can grow in God as we surrender and seek His Holy Spirit.

Surrender. Seek. Pray. The Deposit of the Holy Spirit is yours. Tap into His presence. Offer Him more of yourself and you will receive more of Him. You'll be so glad you did!
