“But just as he who called you is holy,
so be holy in all you do;
For it is written:
‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”
~I Peter 1:15NIV
Do you find it difficult to wrap your mind around God as the Holy Spirit? It’s a bit easier to wrap our minds around the concept of Jesus as Son of God. He was a person. He walked and breathed and lived and died…and lives! (Well, yes, there are some parts of His story that require total faith to fully identify with Him.)
God as Father comes to life in history as Creator, as God and Father of the Jews, and as the divine Father of Jesus Christ through whom He becomes our Father too. But then there’s the Holy Spirit, who seems undefined, distant, even a bit spooky if you use the term “Holy Ghost”. (woooo!) Yet quite the opposite is true about this personality of the trinity. He is the closeness of Christ, the Counselor that Jesus promised to send. This is what Jesus said to his disciples the day before he was crucified:
“I will ask the Father and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth…you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you… (John 14:16-18.”
Christmas celebrates the coming of Christ as the newborn Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, Son of God and Redeemer of man.
Easter celebrates the coming of Christ from the tomb, victorious over death; our invitation to be forgiven of sin, to gain eternal life in heaven.
Pentecost celebrates the coming of Christ through the Holy Spirit, the opportunity to live a holy and victorious God-empowered life of love, to be fully one with Jesus Christ and The Father.
John the Baptist announced the coming of Christ by explaining,
"I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come…He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire (Luke 3:16).”
Just think of it: the God and Father of Jesus Christ, Creator of the universe, longs for us to “Be holy as [He] is holy!”
I pray you will join us on this fifty day journey from Easter to Pentecost, as we seek to be more fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit and discover how to live a life of Holy! Set apart by God, separated from sin by Christ, cleansed and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Begin now by praying and/or journaling this prayer.
Listen. Journal or sketch the Holy Spirit's answer:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.”
~Psalm 139:23-24 NLT
